FAQ’s about Concrete Polishing

Q. What is concrete polishing?

A: Concrete polishing is a mechanical process of diamond tools underneath a concrete grinding/polishing machine. Starting with course grit diamonds, you work your way up thru finer & finer diamond tooling, each removing scratches left by previous grit. The concrete polishing process will usually entail 9-Invivia 21Harrington0 different grits. SONY DSC

Q: Is concrete polishing dusty?

A: No, the polished concrete process can be done either wet or dry. When done wet, the water controls the dust & you have a slurry to clean up. When the polished concrete process is done dry, vacuums are attached to the machines which collect 99+% of dust generated. A typical concrete polishing job will generate about 1 lb. of dry dust/ SqFt.

Q: Can the concrete be colored in the concrete polishing process?

A: Yes, the concrete can be colored in a number of ways during the polished concrete process. One way, is acid staining. With acid staining, a chemical reaction happens within the concrete, permanently coloring the concrete. The amount of calcium hydroxide that the acid reacts with, varies through a concrete slab, making the reaction more intense in some areas & less intense in other areas. Thus, the variegated marbled look.                             Next, are acetone dyes, which are applied by specialty sprayers. The dye works into the pours of the concrete, permanently coloring the concrete. Acetone dyes dry almost instantly, allowing the concrete polishing to proceed right after application.Picture 076 Boston restarant6 Moyhihan3 Next are water based stains or dyes which again, work into the concrete pours, permanently coloring the concrete. The range of colors is much broader with acetone dyes & water based stains, as apposed to acid stains. As all of these coloring techniques only color about 1/32″-1/16″ of top layer of concrete, the coloring process is performed during the finer grits of the concrete polishing process, where very little concrete is being taken off the surface.

Q: Can faux grout lines or other patterns be engraved into concrete.

A: YesPicture 180 Picture 786 Picture 097 , faux grout lines or virtually any design or pattern can be cut into a polished concrete floorPicture 168. Stencils are often used as borders for a very intricate look. Logo’s can also be reproduced as a stencil to be incorporated into a polished concrete floor.

Q: Is polished concrete flooring durable?

A: Yes, extremely durable due to the application of liquid silicate hardeners/densifiers used during the polished concrete process. These products fill the micro pores in the concrete surface thereby eliminating dusting & other problems associated with untreated concrete.                         In most cases, a stain guard product is applied. as the last step, to the polished concrete surface & burnished in with a burnishing machine.                 I hope this was helpful & informative.

Konstantinov3Here we have a concrete floor in pretty rough condition & approx.780 SqFt. There was an area where the old furnace was that was cut out. We repoured this section with concrete & let cure for 28 days. There were also cracks that needed repair. We chased cracks with a V-blade to open them up. We then filled them with polymeric sand, watered & let them harden. Since polished concrete does not cover or hide any defects, the decision was made to pour a 3/8″ Rapid Set Tru self leveling overlayment, then dye & polish that. The first step to this
process is applying a 2-part Epoxy primer with sand broadcast into it. This primer acts as a waterproofer,as well as, what the overlay will bond to.

Next was to pour  3/8″ depth Rapid set TRU, self leveling overlay. This took about 2 hours for 3 men. The next day the grinding & polishing process began with 40 grit metal bond diamonds under my SASE 435 machine. From here we went to 80 &150 grit metal bond diamonds, then switched to resin bond diamonds in 50, 100, 200, 400 grits. Here we applied Ameripolish OS densifier, which is formulated  for these dense overlayments. Next, we polished with 800 grit resins., & applied Ameripolish OS dye, also specially formulated, in 2 colors., gold & burnt sienna.

To finish, we polished with 1500 & 3000 grit diamond resins. Then applied 2 applications of Ameripolish Stain Protecter & burnished with high speed burnisher. This is the end result.
